About me
Dr Annabel Sowemimo is a doctor, academic, activist and writer, and an NHS Consultant in Sexual & Reproductive Health in South London. Her first book, Divided: Racism, Medicine and Why We Need to Decolonise Healthcare (2023), won the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing and a Breast Cancer Book of the Year award, and was shortlisted for several major prizes. She founded the Reproductive Justice Initiative (formerly Decolonising Contraception), which aims to address health inequalities and racial disparities, and has received multiple awards for this work, including an outstanding achievement award from the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). Her interests include tackling Gender Based Violence and improving healthcare access for marginalised groups. Annabel is also a PhD candidate and Harold Moody Scholar at King’s College London, researching the experiences of Black women in Britain with long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs).
