About me
Sofia S. Villar is a Research Professor and Group Leader within the Efficient Study Design theme at the MRC Biostatistics Unit, University of Cambridge, where she also serves as Academic Lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
Her research bridges optimization, machine learning, and statistics to develop computationally feasible, patient-centric adaptive trial designs that accelerate treatment delivery while preserving statistical power.
She holds a PhD in Business Administration and Quantitative Methods (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, 2012) and was awarded the prestigious Biometrika post-doctoral fellowship in 2014. Dr. Villar co-leads the Adaptive Designs Working Group for the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership.
As senior statistician, she steers major national innovative trials—including PIPAH, NOTACS, and STRATOSPHERE—implementing advanced Bayesian methods, sample size re-estimation, and response-adaptive randomization.
